This month sees the release of the Danish translation of CitiGen PI Gísli Pálsson’s recent book The Man Who Stole Himself.
The book follows the life of Hans Jonathan, who was born into slavery in the Danish colony of St. Croix (now part of the US Virgin Islands), and who ended his life a free man in Iceland. The Danish translation of the book, Manden som stjal sig selv, is published by Rebel With a Cause (Copenhagen), and the book release coincides with the centennial commemoration of the sale of the Virgin Islands from Denmark to the USA.
Also to mark this date, on 1 March 2017 the Danish National Archives announced that digitised copies of all records from the period of Denmark’s colonial influence in the West Indies will now be freely accessible online to members of the public. The online archive can be consulted here.
